VW’s history can be traced back to the early 1930s, when the German automobile industry was dominated by luxury cars. There was the need for an affordable and efficient car for the masses. It was at this time that Adolf Hitler (Hitler), the then Chancellor of Germany, commissioned Ferdinand Porsche (Ferdinand), an automobile engineer, to design a car for the common man. The car, then unofficially known as the Volkswagen (meaning ‘People’s Car’ in German), was to have a top cruising speed of 100 kilometers per hour in not more than 7 liters fuel and the capacity to carry a family of five members.
